Volcanic island chain in the N Pacific,
stretching 1,900 km/1,200 mi SW of Alaska, of
which it forms part. Population 5,000 Inuit
(Eskimo), most of whom belong to the Greek
Orthodox Church,1,600 Aleuts, plus a large US
military establishment. There are 14 large
and over 100 small islands, running along the
Aleutian Trench. The islands are mountainous,
barren, and treeless; they are ice-free all
the year round, but are often foggy.
